Altos del Sur sits high on the slopes of Cerro Piltriquitrón, facing the Andes. In summer the stream runs strong, the native forest closes over the trails and the light stretches past ten at night. The deck and the grill end up being the best room in the cabin.

Altos del Sur sits high on the slopes of Cerro Piltriquitrón, facing the Andes. In winter the snow comes down off the mountain and the forest falls silent. Inside there's firewood provided, heating and big windows to watch it fall. You head out to ski at Perito Moreno and come back to light the fire again.

Every cabin is designed around its setting: the mountain and the native plants are visible from every room, and the layout of the grounds gives each family its privacy. We look after you ourselves, the owners.

You leave the car at Wharton, 15 km from the cabins, and carry on on foot or horseback. It's about four hours' walk to the refuge, with a suspension bridge and little river beaches to stop at along the way.

Doable in a day, or sleep at the refuge and come back the next.

It's the mountain you see from the cabin. From the grounds it's a 6 km climb to the platform; from there half an hour's walk to Bosque Tallado and as much again to the refuge, at 1,450 m.

At the top the whole valley opens up. It's the closest outing we have.
